Pomelo (Kaao Yai) : a yummy fruit of Samut Songkram

There are varieties of pomelo in Thailand That means there are many choices to pick the one we like. For me I didn't really pay much attention which pomelo is the best. If I want to eat it I just go to a fresh market and buy it. Until recently I changed my mind, I have found a special pomelo. I remembered how confusing when I went to a fresh market to buy a pomelo, it was not easy to pick one. I saw lots of varieties I had no idea which one I really wanted. They come in different colours and different shapes. Fortunately, some venders convinced me to taste different kinds of pomelo, so I didn't hesitate to try and then I could make a decision.

Luckily, that day I found a pomelo I wanted to buy. It is called "Kaao Yai" (ขาวใหญ่) sepecies. The vender was kind enough giving me some pomelo flesh to taste, he told me, 'It is special pomelo because it is seedless, or has some tiny seeds.' and he gave me a little bit background of Kaao Yai. It has been widely grown in Samut Songkram province. The rich soil makes Kaao Yai a special pomelo. It is getting popalar not only Thais but also oversea customers, especially Chinese customers. I have no doubt what he did say because I could see that pomelo flesh I had just chewed pop-up nicely in my mouth, crunchy, sweet and a little bit sour. It is yummy indeed! Its colour is like honey. Farmers call its sack "shrimp" (koong in Thai) because of its shape, he remarked.
Kaao Yai is one of the best pomelos I have heard so far. I had many kinds of pomelo before, but this one is great. So next time if I want to eat pomelo I won't definitely miss Kaao Yai. I convince you to try some.

A Day Trip to Si Chang Island



At first glance when you are approaching the island. You may come up with the question like “Is this a tempting offer?” It is understandable why you think this way, because its area is surrounded by cargo ships, fishing boats, ugly buildings etc. The whole island doesn’t seem so attractive, you may think. I do sometimes when I see something and it is not from what I am expecting, I could jump to conclusion easily and disappointed, but it is not always the case. Here, in this island there are some places could blow your mind. 


I set my one day trip plan to Si Chang island because I just want to swim and off from the beaten track at the same time that are the reasons. So I grasped things that I only needed for swimming then I went out swiftly. I took the ferry from Koh Loi port, Si Racha, the fare is 50 baht. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the island. When I got there, I rented a motorbike which is 250 baht for one day, there is no need to identify yourself before they hand it to you. You just pay and take a motorbike ride. I rode along the road, before long I was out of town and emerged myself in the middle of mountain area, it looks green and lush, it was quite pleasant, and the air was fresh actually. I dropped by some places then I was heading to the beach that I wanted to spend most of the relaxing time to swim, read and drink. Here are some pictures.




The ferry leaves every hour, the last trip from the island to Si Racha is at 7.00 pm, the fare for the last ferry is 60 baht.

10 Things to Do in Krabi

Krabi is a must-visit. It is one of the most beautiful provinces in the south of Thailand. Especially, a small beach town in Krabi called Ao Nang, a central point of tourism where resorts and hotels are located and where you can reach beautiful islands. Its area has many rock formations covered by rain forest. I’ve been living in Ao Nang for several years. So I know where to eat local foods, where to visit & what to do. Langkawi; Using public transport all the way down to reach the Andaman sea

          My trip was to travel to Langkawi, I started from Krabi in the early morning. I set my plan to travel by using public means all the way down to the south of Thailand and reach the island in the Andaman sea. I think, we all know that if we want to visit somewhere "a must visit". We will jump into a pack of tourists. So, I want to get off from the beaten tracks.

          I took the public bus from Krabi Bus Station at 7.30 a.m. directly to Trang, then took another public bus from Trang to Satun. When I arrived Satun I was looking for pick-up truck to connect to Tammalung pier where all travellers are checked their passport and show ticket before going out Thailand to Langkawi. Round trip ticket is only available for Thais. The trip had not end yet, my next journey travelled by the sea. The huge ferry boat took me to the island. It was luck enough that there was no storm, no cloud during my trip. This trip by ferry took around 1 hour until I got the island. I finally arrived Langkawi. After that I took a taxi from the pier to the resort. So, my whole trip took around 8 hours. It was not bad to use public transport for my travelling, it only gave me a little bit tired but the view during the way to the destination was spectacular, so I forgot all sort of obstacles.

          The picture of the waterfall above was the place I really enjoyed. It called Temurun waterfall. I rented a motorbike and spent the day by driving around the island.

Why does the Sand bubbler crab form tiny sand balls?


Even though I go to the beach quite often, until recently I have never realized that on some of Krabi's beaches are tiny cute crabs that seem to work really hard. What I discovered during low tide were mysterious patterns, created from sand balls, that made me wonder why they have been formed over and over again.

After swimming in the ocean at Klong Muang beach, Krabi, I went back home, still wondering about these sand patterns. Hence, I started searching for details about this phenomenon on the internet and found a quite interesting explanation indeed .

These tiny animals are called Sand bubbler crabs (Pu Lom in Thai). Beside the fact that they can run very fast, they also form these tiny sand balls around their hole. The ball's size is as big as their body. Each ball takes about 10 seconds or even less to form. What in fact interested me most is an answer to the question: "Why do they do this?"

The answer is simple. It is all about food.
High tide brings organic substances onto the beach. At low tide, these crabs will come out of their holes, looking for food.
They use their claws to take the sand through their mouth and after having eaten all organic materials from it, they will release the sand again. During this process, however, they will shape the sand into tiny balls. These crabs will form about 360 balls per hour, and these balls are not just being scattered around. Amazing patterns are being created that soon, after 3 or 4 hours, cover most of the beach.

So, why do they form these patterns? In this way they make sure that they don't come back and eat the sand again that has already been stripped of organic material. Smart, isn't it?

More choices of weird food in Thailand !

I had a chance to travel to the northeastern of Thailand. I was lucky to be there at the right time, because there is a big variety of foods in summer. So, I did not hesitate to try all of the rather unusual kinds of foods.

Grilled Cicada Eggs











Cicada eggs can be found in summer at local markets, especially in the northeast of Thailand.
These eggs are being wrapped in banana leaves and then grilled for a few minutes on a charcoal fire. When they are done, they will change their color to a deep red. Then you can either eat it with sticky rice or mashed. Don't forget to put a little bit salt on it. The taste is somewhat oily, the texture is crunchy and they pop in your mouth  nicely. Good actually!


Tadpole Soup




This kind of food comes with the rainy season. Before cooking, tadpoles have to be cleaned with water and taken the guts out from their body. You might wonder how local people take the guts out. They just press the tadpole's body until the guts come out through their anus. Then they are being cleaned again. The tadpoles, not the local people.
Tadpole soup is eaten with steamed or sticky rice. It tastes a bit spicy. Actually, Local people eats it with sticky rice. Sticky rice is the main staple food in the northeast of Thailand.

  
Fried Stink Bugs




Stink bugs are both served as local snack and main dish. But this bug can only be found during the summer season. So, you have to come to the right time. Otherwise, you will probably miss it.
The way to cook these bugs is easy. First, you have to rinse them. Then fry them on a pan and put some salt on them. Keep frying until they turn brown or yellow, which means the Stink bugs are now ready to be served. I had it for a snack, sure it smells stinky, but the taste is great.



Grilled Buffalo Skin


I want to say Wow! even though I know grilled buffalo skin well and had it many times before. It's a long-straight dark thick piece. After it is grilled, it looks different from what you see in the above picture. As you might already guess, it is really hard to chew. People still like to eat it, though, no matter how hard to chew, and they eat it with sticky rice.
